No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
