The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
