Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
